Information About Car Batteries

How Often Should You Replace a Car Battery?

On average, a car battery should last approximately three to five years, but certain other factors can affect battery life. Among those are the amount of driving you do, what weather conditions it’s exposed to, and whether you stay on top of regular battery maintenance.

How Do I Know if I Need a New Battery?

The first indicator would be if the vehicle’s engine doesn’t turn over or starts very weakly. Even if the engine does start up fine, are the battery indicator or check engine lights on? This could be a sign of electrical issues which could come from the battery or its connectors.

When this occurs, it’s a good idea to bring your vehicle in for testing. Usually, before any other part of the electrical system is tested, your vehicle service provider will check the battery first.

Should the problem be with the battery, they will walk you through your replacement and installation options.

Regular Battery Maintenance

Regular maintenance can often expand the life of your battery. The first things to look at are your battery terminals. Corrosive built-up will affect performance and efficiency, but you can help keep the terminals clean with anti-corrosion spray and some gentle scrubbing.

You should check your terminals to make sure the cables are securely tightened. This is also a good time to wipe clean the terminal covers and vent caps.

Maintenance can also include how you use your battery. Do you have run devices such as radios, digital players, or tablets while the engine is shut off? Drawing energy from your battery without replacing it can overwork your battery and affect its life.
